Things to do in Ouarzazate and what to expect— A tourist’s guide to Ouarzazate City, Morocco, 2023
Ouarzazate is a relatively small city south of Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains. It’s known as the ‘gateway to the desert’ as many people stop off there for a night or so on their way from Marrakesh to the Sahara Desert.
However, Ouarzazate has a lot to offer itself, and is perfect for a few days away in the sun, and to experience a new culture. This is my honest travel review of Ouarzazate City, Morocco, including what to expect, where to go, the best food, and what to avoid.
What to expect in Ouarzazate
I visited Ouarzazate in July 2023. It was relatively quiet, as tourist season tends to be in September, when it’s slightly cooler. I visited with my partner for three nights, and we found that from 12pm-7pm the weather was hot, sunny, dry, and the temperature sat at 41 degrees celsius. In the early morning it was around 20–30 degrees, and in the evening it was 30–35 degrees.
We actually quite liked visiting in July, as there weren’t loads of tourists around so we could really get involved with local culture. We just retreated inside to relax in the pool during the midday heat.
